  • This connects to the theme of secrecy because the Giver is trying to talk Jonas out of wanting a painful memory. The Giver is trying to protect Jonas from the pain of memories, even though it would give him wisdom.
  • " I started you with memories of pleasure. My previous failure gave me the wisdom to do that. Jonas, it will be painful. But it need not be painful yet.
  • "Will I?"
  • This connects to the theme of secrecy because seeing colors give Jonas pure joy. It would also give the others living in the Community joy, if the Giver was allowed to share the colors, but, he has to keep them a secret.
  • " Of course. You'll gain wisdom, then, along with the colors. And lots more."
  • "I see all of them. All the colors.
  • This connects to the theme of secrecy because the Giver it saying that life has no meaning without memories, and that is true. Keeping the memories a secret does no good because memories are to be relived and experienced, even the bad ones, because memories make us who we are.
  • " It's just that... without the memories it's all meaningless."
  • "When did they decide that? Let's change it!"
  • This connects to the theme of secrecy because memories lasting a very, very long time can easily over come 2 people. Memories make us who we are, and they are no good being kept a secret. Too many memories can make a person overcome by emotion.
  • "How do you suppose we do that? I've never been able to think of a way, and I'm supposed to have all the wisdom."
  • "I'll come back tomorrow, sir, unless maybe there's something I can do to help."
  • this connects to the theme of secrecy because in this, the Giver is overcome by pain, and Jonas helps soften the pain by taking the memory. People can help others by sharing a memory, which evens the memory over 2 people. Memories are made to be shared. Memories can help others feel emotion and empathy.
  • "Please, take some of the pain."
  • This connects to the theme of secrecy because the Giver says the pain in holding memories isn't the memory itself, it's the loneliness of it, and this is true. Memories are meant to be shared because memories help people mature and grow in spirit. Memories help make people who they are, and who they will become. they help people bond and grow together. memories can create friendships, like Jonas and the Giver.
  • "The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories are meant to be shared."
