Storyboard Text

  • Marriage is the union of two people who love each other, and are ready to commit their lives to one another. So if a man and woman are allowed to get married, why can’t people of the same sex get married too?
  • The three most important things to consider about this issue are the ethics, values, and laws associated with this debate. An ethic is something society believes is right or wrong, and determines what is morally righteous
  • A value is something you think is important, and changes from person to person, based on their experiences, religion, culture etc While laws are the system of rules implemented by the government which everyone must follow, and they are put in place to act as a guideline for acceptable behaviour and ensures equality for everyone so that no one in our community is disadvantaged
  • In May of 2004, Attorney-General Philip Ruddock introduced the Marriage Amendment 2004 which was passed by Senate, and states; “Marriage means the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life. Certain unions are not marriages. This means that only a man and a woman can get married, and not people of the same gender.
  • After the plebiscite (vote by only the members of the government) in 2016 failed in the Senate, with 33 votes to 29, Attorney General George Brandis raises an important issue about same-sex marriage; "A vote against this bill is a vote against marriage equality."
  • It denies a child either a father or mother- It is in the child’s best interests that they be raised under the influence of their natural father and mother. This rule is confirmed by the evident difficulties faced by the many children who are orphans or are raised by a single parent, a relative, or a foster parent. He will always be deprived of either a mother or a father role model. Same-sex “marriage” ignores a child’s best interests
  • There are many arguments against same-sex marriage, some of which include:
  • The goal of marriage is to procreate, so that the human race may continue and thrive without the threat of dying out
  • It offends God- by violating the natural order created by God, you are sinning and offending God. Jesus also tells us; “But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife." Mark 10:6-7
