Tim's brother Sam has joined the war as a patriot. He returns home and has dinner with his family. While eating Sam and his father start to argue about being in the war. After the argument Sam helps Tim with chores as they talk about the life as a continental officer. Tim then heads off to bed but he wakes up to yelling. Sam and his father are fighting about the gun Sam needs for the war. After Sam's father says he can't have the gun he storms out of the house then Tim's father starts to cry.
Mr Meeker is being beaten by continental officers so Tim goes to steal Sam's gun from him to protect his father. He wakes Sam up and he starts to chase him,then Tim almost shoots Sam and then they go to check on his father.
Tim and his father are traveling back from Verplanks Point during a snow storm. Tim's father travels ahead of him on the lookout for people trying to steal vauables . Tim starts to get worried becasue he hasn't seen his father in a while. He then finds out that his father has been taken by a group of people. Tim then has to finish the journey home by himself.
British troops march through Redding to find messengers for the patriots. The British end up injuring a man and killing a few others. After this event Tim doesn't know if he is really on the British side anymore.
Tim and his family find out that his father is now dead because of a disease outbreak on a British ship. Sam is now home and one night Sam and Tim hear someone trying to steal the cows. Sam tries to stop the men but they beat him up and accuse him of trying to steal the cattle.
Sam is sentenced to be shot and Tim's mother goes to speak with General Putnam but she can't do anything. Tim then tries to help Sam escape by throwing a bayonet over the fence of the little wooden shack Sam had to stay in. Tim then realizes they have moved Sam so there is nothing he can do , the next day Sams's mother does not attend they shooting. Tim is there and as they are about to shoot him Tim yells do not shoot him. After that the continental officers shoot Sam dead.
