  • "I thought I could be white"(page 12) The narrator wanted to become American because she is in America. 
  • Theme - Self Identity base on your cultural not base on society. 
  • "You Korean, you always be Korean. Or people so good" (page 12) Narrator's mother wanted her to be Korean and want her to keep her cultural. 
  • Conflict - The narrator's conflict between her mother and grandmother about her self identity. 
  • "I've always hated being Oriental/Asian" The Narrator hated her cultural and doesn't know who she really are because of her mother and grandmother that always wanted her to be Korean not American. 
  • She went to Korean by herself to find her identities and the answer why her mother and grandmother wanted her keep her Korean Identities.  She met her uncle then she realized about her grandmother is life before they came to America. 
  • In Thai traditions the parent have to take care of you until you're marry. So, you still under my rules even you're 18th it's not like American people.
  • Now I'm 18th, I am considering an adult I can do whatever I want!
  • As a Thai women I expect you to know how to cook and take care of the house. In our society women are expect to be marry to a men who are willing to take care of you and you will be moving in to your husband house. So, get practice for cooking for your husband's family. 
  • Mom! I'm hungry can you cook something for me please 
  • I think marriage is the last thing on earth I want to do. Marriage cost a lot of money it would be must better to use money to travel with my love one, But my parent expect me to marry before anything happens. Marriage is one goal of my parent for me because they think marriage is very important to me. Thai women are expect to be marry and the men are expect to have enough money to give to the women's parent before marry. It's like paying for the mother for taking care of his wife.
