What is Personal Space? We have all heard the saying, you are invading my personal space. But what does it mean? Personal space is the comfort level at which one feels saf and secure from others with whom they are conversing. Hall (1963, 1966) as cited by HIll (1998),proposes that there are four zones of personal space. They are intimate distance, personal distance , social distance and public distance. These zones are characterized by the state of our personal relationships with the people with whom we are engaging
What is territoriality? In Dominica there is a geographical area known as the Kalinago territory. This area is especially demarcated for the island's indigenous people. It boundaries are scuh that one entering and leaving the Kalinago territory, knows when they enter and exit. In the same manner, territoriality deals with the boundaries, physical or otherwise that we adhere to in our engagement with others. Hill (1998), postulates that "territory refers to a relatively fixed geographically area." Further , he posits that territories are marked whether with personal or other indicator to establish ownership, (Hill, 1998).
The difference between personal space and territoriality. In the video Environmental Psychology, personal space and territory, the difference between personal space and territoriality are explained. From the video, there are at least 2 major differences between personal space and territory. They are proximity and boundaries. Firstly, personal space has four defining characteristics. They are intimacy, personal ,social and public. Our personal space is carried with us, whereever, we go. It demonstrates our limitations with the people we interact with. People we know, like our family members have access to our intimate space, in different places; home, work and otherwise but strangers do not have access to our personal space and we keep them at arms length.
From the video, participants in the experiement, became defensive, or nervous when their personal space was infringed upon. Territoriality on the other hand according to the video have those markers that indicate to another person that something belongs to somebody. There are three difinigcharacteristics. They are primary, secondary an public. We erect those boundaries to prevent others from infringing on our personal space because territory has a wide scope and may allude to the communiity in which we reside to our world. In the video, we saw that mats were symbolic boundaries. A mat suggests that someone lives there and should you desire entry, one ought to knock on the door. Other boundaries were physical one like walls and doors that serve to keep others from invading our space.
