  • The First Continental Congress, led by Peyton Randolph, was a gathering of delegates from all colonies except Georgia.

  • Thomas Jefferson would write the Declaration of Independence with the help of Ben Franklin and John Adams. This spurred the the Revolutionary War as a fight for full independence from Britain.

  • After declaring independence from Britain, the colonies decided they needed to form some sort of government. In 1781 the U.S drafted the Articles of Confederation . This created a central government, but it was very weak.
