I am pleased to announce my marriage to Catherine of Aragon
Please Henry, I beg of you, I will be a good wife.
Catherine, you cannot give me a male heir, I am going to divorce you.
Maybe the King will want to marry me..
I am afraid I do not give you permission, you are a defender of faith.
I wish to divorce Catherine of Aragon and remarry to Anne Boleyn.
King Henry Viii married the wife of his late brother, Catherine of Aragon. They were happily married, and had adaughter, Queen Mary. King Henry longed for a male heir. Finally, Catherine, gave birth to a boy, named Henry. The king was overjoyed.
I would like to introduce my new wife, Anne Boleyn.
Six weeks after his birth, Henry passedaway. The King was furious. Catherine was now growing too old to bear childrenand Henry Viii decided that it was more important to him to have a male heir, then be happily married. King Henry Viii decided that it was necessary todivorce Catherine, and go in search of a younger wife.
I declare England to know be a protestant nation, under the Church of England, in which I am the head.
King Henry Viii appealed to the church, andasked for permission to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn, ayoung, pretty woman. The church declined Henry’s request, and begged him tomaintain his faith. The church proclaimed, “You are a defender of faith.” Henry was furious.
Henry married Anne Boleyn anyway, but theChurch declared the marriage annul. Henry began to think of ways to allow thismarriage to pass and feel frustrated towards the church. Henry Viii decidedthat in order to provide a male heir to England, he would need to start a newchurch, and allow his country to break away from the Catholic Church.
King Henry Viii started the Church of England. A protestant religion, that allowed divorce, and remarriages. Henry was head of the church, and made other changes that allowed the people of England to understand the bible and prayer, being translated into English instead of Latin. Monasteries and Catholic organisations that focused on the Catholic religion, were shut downand money that came out of them, were invested into the Church of England, and strengthening the new independent religion. Anne Boleyn gave birth to Queen Elizabeth.
The Church of England began to strengthenas more followers were converted to the new religion. The effects of theEnglish reformation were obvious after England’s split from the CatholicChurch. After Henry’s death Queen Mary took the throne. She was a strong catholic and punished all protestants because Henry divorced her mother. She was not a popular Queen and people tried to get her sister, Queen Elizabeth, to hold the throne. Queen Elizabeth was a protestant. When Queen Mary died,Elizabeth took the reign. She did not punish Catholics but demanded that England be a protestant nation. Elizabeth made being a member of the Church ofEngland easier as she made the religion similar to the Catholic Region. Englandto this day is still a vastly protestant country.
