Run fast, number doesn't get marked down.
Is father alive? Are there still miracles? Where's block 36?
On page 308, line 48-53, a guard give the prisoners tips to pass inspection, telling them to make yourself look strong by not being afraid, as well as running so that the inspectors can't look at your number. " 'Before you go into the next room, try to move your limbs, give yourself some color. Don't walk slowly, run! Run as if you had the devil at your heels! Don't look at the SS. Run, straight in front of you! ' He paused and then added: 'And most important, don't be afraid!' "
In lines 32-33, Wiesel writes, "the old men stated in their corner, silent, motionless, hunted-down creatures. Some were praying. " In a world full of different religions, we often see praying as a cry for help when situations are out of someone's hands. This provides a strong tone of "The weak are helpless in this situation, they are too weak to work and their end is near."
In the second to last and last paragraph, Wisel uses a lot of incomplete sentences, which is meant to show what was going through Wisel's mind at the time, his father should be dead, we wants a miracle to happen, he wants to get back to his block, and shows us this in short, rapid sentences demonstrating his thoughts.
