Storyboard Text

  • In 1467, there was a civil war in Japan, known as the Ōnin War. It lasted for 10 years of bloody conflict, but the Ashikaga Shogunate remained dominant. For a time.
  • Why should I?
  • Obey your shogun!
  • The Ashikaga Shogunate was not militarily strong, and so relied on loyalty to remain in power. The Ōnin War greatly tested that loyalty, and weakened the power of the Shogunate.
  • I-I-I, I meant yes of course, my lord!
  • The warfare caused during the Ōnin War was the result of multiple daimyos rebelling against the Shogunate, attempting to take power.
  • One daimyo rebelling snowballed into many, and while the Ashikaga Shogunate remained in power, it was greatly weakened.
  • Fight against the Shogun!
  • You insolent scoundrel! How dare you!
  • In 1565, Ashikaga Yoshiteru, the current emperor of Japan, was assassinated. Oda Nobunaga, a daimyo, took the opportunity to install a puppet king in the form of Yoshiteru’s brother. Nobunaga believed that he could unify Japan, a viewpoint that many daimyos thought was necessary (the unification of Japan).
  • Japan will be unified again!!!
  • Nobunaga used this opportunity to start his campaign of unification, eventually succeeding. He is known as one of the great unifiers of Japan, but also for his ruthlessness.
