  • FIRE!
  • Stop!
  • Men!
  • Women!
  • In chapter  1, all of the Jews start getting deported. First, the foreign Jews got sent out and a couple days later "We walked toward the station, where a convoy of cattle cars was waiting. The Hungarian police made us climb into the cars, eighty persons in each one" (Wiesel 22). Then the train left.
  • Is this what you call working?!
  • In chapter 2, on the way to Birkenau, Mrs. Schacter keeps screaming "fire" while on the train. "She was howling, pointing through the window" "Look! Look at this fire!"... There was nothing. Only the darkness of night" (Wiesel 25). Everyone thought she was crazy and people got mad at her for yelling it because she would annoy them and wake them up in the middle of the night.
  • I'll go with you rather than staying.
  • In chapter 3, as they get to Birkenau, the Wiesel's get separated. The sisters and mother gets separated from Elie and his father, ""Men to left! Women to the right!"... I didn't know that was the moment in time and the place where I was my mother and Tzipora forever" (Wiesel 29). this will be the last time they will ever see each other again. He though he doesn't have his mother, he makes sure to stay with his dad and not lose him.
  • Have you seen my son?!
  • No.
  • In chapter 4, Elie and his father are at Buna. They go for a medical checkup and they find out that Elie has a gold crown and want to take, he says he's sick and they don't take it out. The foreman wants Elie's gold crown but at first he doesn't give it to him. The foreman starts beating up his father ""You old loafer!" he started yelling. "Is this what you call working?" And began beating him with an iron bar" (Wiesel 54). Elie then gives it up to the foreman so he doesn't have to see his father get hurt anymore.
  • In chapter 5, Elie's leg needs surgery. He gets frostbite in his leg but holds off going to the infirmary because he feels like they will just kill him for being useless. He gives in and goes and the doctor gives him surgery. While he's recovering, everyone in camp hears that the Russians are coming and they will be evacuated. People in the infirmary are allowed to stay but ""Let's be evacuated with the others," I said" (Wiesel 82). Even with a recovering foot he still decides to go with his father and stay as one.
  • In chapter 6, Rabbi Eliahu comes looking for his son. ""Perhaps someone here has seen my son?" He had lost his son in the commotion" (Wiesel 90). Elie says he doesn't know where he is and after he leaves Elie remembers he saw his son during the march. Elie thinks that his son ran from him because he thought his father was going to get both of them killed. Elie prays and hopes he never does it to his father.
