Hazel, you know the government shows great vigilance in making sure we are equal
Why do we have to wear these handicaps, George?
Everyone take cower if needed, Harrison Bergeron has escaped!!
Musicians, play a synchronize beat for me and her to dance too
In consternation, the mistress said, "I will dance with you"!
It is the year 2081 and equality is achieved. Citizens wear "handicaps" in order to make sure that they are not better then anyone else and equal. We learn about the main characters, George, Hazel and Harrison Bergeron and get some background information about them. "Hazel had a perfectly average intelligence which means she couldn't think about anything in short bursts. WhileGeorge's intelligence was way above normal, he had a little mental handicap radio in his ear". (5)
The only way to stop this beast was to neutralize him and because he winced, it is obvious that he is dead!!
Hazel and George were watching a Ballet on television and the ballerina's are handicapped with weights and masks to hide their looks. Then, a news bulletin came on saying that Harrison Bergeron has escaped. "Harrison Bergeron, age fourteen has just escaped from jail, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow he government". (8)
Harrison bursted in during this bulletin, saying "I am the emperor" while he tore his handicaps off. He calls for an empress to dance with and once he found one, he revealed her true beauty, taking off her handicap and danced away with her. "I shall now select my emperess! he said, looking down on the cowering people. Let the first women who dares rise to her feet claim her mate and her throne"! (9)
While Harrison was dancing with the mistress, the handicapped general showed up to the incident shooting them both with a shotgun. "She fired twice, and the Emperor and Emperess were dead before they hit the floor".(7)
George went to the kitchen for a beer and when he came back, Hazel was crying but could not remember why. They will never know what happened to their son. "Forget sad things" said George. "I always do", said Hazel. "Thats my girl," said George. He winced. There was the sound of a riveting gun in his head. (12)
Whats wrong, Hazel?
I don't remember, but I seen something real sad on the tv
In conclusion, this society was one where everyone could be equal and no one was better then another. As you can tell, a society like this would be very difficult to live in and there would be lots of conflict. Do you think that it would be better to live in a society like this or one where everyone is different?
