  • Bats, rodents, and other animals are often reservoirs for zoonotic diseases, meaning they carry pathogens that can be dangerous for humans
  • But these animals play important roles in our ecosystems; bats, for example, control pests and also serve important pollination functions
  • Humans have encroached on animal habitats, increasing our contact with wild animals and their pathogens
  • Living in a growing and increasingly-connected world, there is a greater risk that these viruses will spread quickly throughout the globe and cause a pandemic
