Lily is a fourteen year old who lives with her angry father in South Carolina. In the story, she experiences a coming of age or maturation. She loses her mother at the age of four and in the story we watch as she is on a journey of forgiveness.

Rosaleen is the housekeeper of Lily and T. Ray. She lives down the street from Lily. She also plays a mother figure role in Lily's life. She is a very brave, caring, and hardworking character in the story. She is a big, mean looking african american woman who will stand up to authority.
“But she’s white, August” pg. 87
August is an African American woman who lives in a pink house with her sisters June and May. She is the oldest Boatwright sister, and acts as a mother to the sisters. She is a beekeeper, who sells jars of honey. She is a very empathetic and caring character in the story. Later in the story, we find out she was a house keeper for Lily's mom.
"I'm going to the wall." pg. 187
T. Ray is Lily's father, he is very mean and does not treat Lily the way a father should. She believes that he hates her but later in the story, we find out he really does love Lily and her mom. His wife left him and that is the reason he treats Lily that way
June is another one of the Boatwright sisters, is the middle sister. She is very resentful to Lily in the story because she has a prejudice to white people. Later in the story, once she gets to know Lily, she starts to love and accept her.
May is the youngest of the three Boatwright sisters. She is a very emotional depressed character because when she was younger she had a twin sister who committed suicide. She has a wailing wall, where she stacks rocks and puts notes in between that express her thoughts. She often goes there when she needs to cry. Later in the story, she commits suicide
