Montresor lives in Paris and a large carnival is going on at the moment. He is thinking about the thousands of injuries that Fortunate has given him. He believes that the grief he has caused must be stopped. Suddenly, Montresor sees Fortunado and they begin to speak about wine.
Montresor is now angry and wants to end the suffering that Fortunado has put upon him. He feels insulted by something that he said, so he devises a plan to kill Montresor.
We are almost there.
Montresor acknowledges Fortunado's fine taste for wine by asking him to taste the Amontillado. Fortunado appears to be seriously ill due to his coughing. He leads him to the catacombs beneath the surface of the city.
Montresor insists that the only point of their walk is to taste the cask of amontillado that is deep into the tunnels. By now Montresor knows exactly what he will do when he reaches the vault.
The pair continues to walk through the catacombs. Fortunado is ill and Montresor repeatedly asks if they must turn back. Fortunado says that he is okay, so they keep going.
Fortunado has become very drunk and and continues to down bottle after bottle of wine until he become weak and dizzy.
