  • The Attack on Fort Sumter April 1861
  • The Battle of Antietam September 1862
  • The Emancipation Proclamation January 1863
  • It was the start of the Civil War and soon after, Arkansas, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee seceded.
  • The Battle of Gettysberg July 1863
  • Appomattox Court House April 1865
  • Robert E. Lee, (the Confederate leader) wanted to invade the North but the Union found their battle plans and attacked them. The North won. It showed the South how powerful the North was. This battle allowed Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
  • It didn’t free any slaves, but it was a turning point that changed the focus of the war to human freedom.
  • Assasination of Lincoln April 1865
  • It was a turning point in the war because the war was going in the North’s favor.
  • General Ulysses S. Grant, (the Union leader) attacked the South. The South surrendered because they were too weak. This caused the Civil War to come to an end, with the North at victory.
  • President Lincoln was assisinated in the back of his head, in a theater. It caused the North and South to have to rebuild their nation without a leader.
