Eight sane people (a psych graduate, three psychologists, a pediatrician, a psychiatrist and painter and housewife) attempted to gain admission to 12 hospitals in 5 states across the US. They phoned up and asked for an appointment There were 3 women and 5 men.
"could you tell me when I will be presented at the staff meeting?"
the pseudo patients arrived at the hospitals and complained they had been hearing unfamiliar voices (the same sex as them) saying "empty", "hollow", "thud"
SCHIZOPHRENIA IN REMISSION
all pseudo patients were given and false name and job but all other details given were true. They took part in all ward activities and told the staff they were no longer experiencing symptoms. They all took notes about their observations.
"You’re not crazy"
pseudo patients at 4 hospitals asked a member of staff "could you tell me when i will be presented at staff meeting? (or when am i likely to be discharged")
none of the pseudo patients were detected and they all received a diagnosis of schizophrenia when admitted and were discharged with schizophrenia in remission. the pseudo patients were in hospital for between 7 and 52 days (average 19 days)
although the pseudo patients were not detected by staff, many of the other patients suspected their sanity. (35 out of 118 voiced their suspicions.
