  • The Shang Dynasty has been dated back to 1766 BCE to 1122 BCE. But according to more recent archaeological work it has been place in 1600 BCE to 1046 BCE.
  • King Tang was the first Shang Dynasty king. He overthrew Jie (leader of the Xia Dynasty)
  • King Tang
  • Mainly a farming society.
  • Their main crops were a variety of cereals- barley, wheat, rice, and millet. They also grew nuts, fruits, and vegetables.   
  • King Tang started the Shang Dynasty near a nice, clean river that had fertile soil, so they could have good crops. The river was called the Yellow River Valley.
  • Millet was the main crop in Northern China. While rice and wheat are more known in Southern China.
  • The Shang Dynasty also raised cows, oxens, pigs, sheep, and other livestock. They domesticated pigs, dogs, sheep, oxen, and silkworms.
  • The farmers were the largest social class during this time.
  • Stone axes, harvesting knives, wooden digging sticks, wooden plows, stone sickles, and stone shovels were used.
  • The farmers used simple, wooden and stone tools to help with the farming.
  • Besides the fact of their farming, the Shang Dynasty had a great military system, and they were always winning wars. But due to their weakened army (from all the wars) and King Zhou's drinking, and not ruling correctly.
  • So the Zhou Dynasty overthrew the Shang Dynasty. The Zhou Dynasty started shortly after that.
  • The Zhou Dynasty overthrew the Shang, because the Zhou believed that the Shang King was evil and heaven no longer wanted him to rule.
