The story begins in the year 1968. Doug Swieteck lived in New York City with an unstable family. With an agressive brother and abusive father, he often had hardships in his life. His mother also suffered from her husband's behavior, and Doug's other brother Lucas was in the military fighting in the Vietnam War.

Doug, give me Joe Pepitone's cap or you get a broken arm!
One day, Doug's father gets a new job in Marysville, New York, so the family decides to move there. However, Doug did not like having to move away, so he had a negative view on living in Marysville.
I hate this town.
In Marysville, Doug got a job at Spicer's Deli, where he meets Lil Spicer, as a delivery boy. He wasn't so good in school and often got detention for talking back to teachers, specifically the P.E. coach for not participating in the sport units. On Saturdays, he went to the library where Mr. Powell gave him lesson's on how to draw Audubon's famous paintings of birds.
