  • Dog vs. Man
  • A boy is at a street corner and encounters a dog. The dog is dark brown and has a short rope dragging from his neck. At first the dog approaches the boy in a timid manner but soon becomes excited. The boy then strikes the dog because it nipped at him. The dog reacts in an apologetic manner and seems to beg for forgiveness. Even after this apology the boy continues to strike the dog. This suggest that the boy is very immature and aggressive. These traits introduce a conflict between the boy and the dog. His actions makes us wonder what he is experiencing. We also notice how the dog is acting more humanly then the actual human.
  • Climax
  • The dog continues to follow the boy down the street. The boy would often turn around and beat the dog. However the dog wouldn't react in anger but in guilt. Once they reached there destination the boy sits and watches the dog perform tricks. This makes him see the dog as valuable. So the boy grabs the rope and drags the dog into his families room.He then introduces the dog and readers to his family during a meeting. There conversation gives us a sense of how the family is abusive and wrong. This is shown in how the dad allows the dog to stay just to make his wife angry.
  • Falling Action
  • Some conflict in the story is between the boy and the father. When the boy sees the dog being beaten by his father he defends him. We can also tell by his fear that he was hit by his father before. There was also a conflict between the dog and Father. When the boy is not present the father would constantly try and abuse the dog. He would try throwing things at the dog and even hitting the dog with a cooking pan. However the dog is to swift and dodges a majority or all of the attempts at abuse.
  • Resolution
  • The boy and the dog go out and come in to find his father in a drunken state. The boy knowing not to be seen by his father runs to the table. The dog not knowing this stands there looking at the boy in curiosity. The father then notices the dogs presence and goes into a fit of rage. He chases the dog around the room and strikes the dog multiple time in the head. The father then picks up the dog and proceeds to throw him out the window.
  • When the dog was thrown out the window it caught the attention of the neighbors. Once the dog landed in an ally the children from the neighborhood went running out to see the dog. The dog had fallen five stories and rolled onto the sidewalk. They were all shock by the event but not affected.
  • The moment the dog was out the window the boy toddled outside the room to go after him. He sidestepped down six flights of stairs. He searches in vain for his friend and finds him in the ally way. The boy runs over to his friend and kneels by his body. He stayed in that position for the rest of the day mourning over the bloody body of his one friend. The message was how one person can change your life as well as your personality. In the beginning the body was cruel, abusive, and immature. Through his relationship with the dog he became kind and compassionate despite his circumstances.
