Wonder -R.J Palacio
Characters: August Pullman; a boy born w/ facial disabilities Julius Albans: antagonist/bully Jack Will: Auggie's best friend Olivia, Isabel & Nate Pullman: family of Auggie
Conflict: Due to August's facial deformities, he constantly gets starred at and frowned upon by society. Julius Albans makes it worse by repeatedly making fun of him and spreads 'rumors' about him at school.
Setting: 2012, Town house in Manhattan, New York & Beecher Prep Middle School
Rising Action: It is Halloween and Auggie walks into his class being undetected because he has face covered. He overhears Julian, Jack and other students talk very horribly about him. Jack says he's forced to hang out with Auggie.
Falling Action 2: Auggie unfriends Jack. Jack is confused as to why. Julius then told him that Auggie overheard the conversation in which they talked bad about him. Jack then punches Julius in the face for calling him a freak.
Climax: The Beecher Prep fifth graders are enjoying an outdoor movie night at their Nature Retreat. When Jack needs to find the restroom, Auggie accompanies him. The bathroom line was too long so they went to the bushes. Along the way they see a group of high school kids. They look at Auggie and start to verbally abuse him. Luckily three boys from Beecher prep have doubled back to see what the ruckus is. Amos, Miles, and Henry come to the aid of their classmates, calmly trying to defuse the situation
Resolution: Although it probably should have happened a lot sooner, it takes the injustice of senseless violence toward August for it to finally click with everyone that he is just a kid like any other; a kid who doesn't deserve to be tortured for the way he looks. Auggie's made the high honor roll, but the medal he gets isn't for academics—August's award is for the less-quantifiable qualities of character, courage, and greatness, all of which he possesses in spades.
HONOR ROLL: AUGUST PULLMAN character, courage & greatness.
