  • "He left his rams/and he-goats in the yard outside, and swung/high overhead a slab of solid rock/to close the cave" (86-89).
  • "Straight/forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it/ deep in his crater eye" (235-237).
  • "Then slung a man under each middle one/to ride there safely, shielded left and right" (284-285). "Blinded, and sick with pain from his head wound,/the master stroked each ram, then let them pass" (296-297).
