Those who refrained from drinking alcohol were seen as higher in class and more civilized.
Reformers made small steps for improvement by advocating to the people, signing pledges, giving out pamphlets, etc.
The American Temperance Society was formed in Boston and worked with both men and women to help spread the word on temperance.
The Washingtonian Society comprised of former alcoholics who began the move towards recovery.
Eventually, reformers wanted definite action and turned to changing legislation to decrease temptation.
