Storyboard Text

  • During the 1800s, there was a high rate of alcohol consumption. People constantly drank and caused a deficiency at work and in home life.
  • Those who refrained from drinking alcohol were seen as higher in class and more civilized.
  • Reformers made small steps for improvement by advocating to the people, signing pledges, giving out pamphlets, etc.
  • The American Temperance Society was formed in Boston and worked with both men and women to help spread the word on temperance.
  • The Washingtonian Society comprised of former alcoholics who began the move towards recovery.
  • Eventually, reformers wanted definite action and turned to changing legislation to decrease temptation.
