Caroline's Classroom before lunch
"Here's a quarter, go eat downtown today. You can pay me back tomorrow."
"Nome thank you ma'am."
"What is it, Jean Louise?"
"Miss Caroline, He's a Cunningham."
Everyone pulls out their buckets and Walter Cunningham doesn't have one. Miss Caroline offers him a quarter for a meal in town, but he rejects the offer, since he won't be able to pay her back. Scout starts to explain this.
Scout attempts to explain that Walter and his family can only pay others back through favors rather than actual money. Her attempt fails, and she is 'whipped' for it, causing the class to errupt in laughter.
The third grade teacher ends up coming in the room, and yells at Miss Caroline before the lunch bell rings. Not being able to handle the stress, she covers her head in her hands.
