  • L'Overture
  • The slaves will be freed from enslavement and French forces
  • Later known as Haiti, Saint Domingue was home to over 500,000 slaves. The Revolution of America and France started to inspire ideas of independence
  • Fall of L'Overture
  • The slaves had multiple rebellions that included uprisings and poisoning of masters.
  • Dessalines
  • Toussaint L'Overture was a former slave that led rebellions against French forces. He believed in abolishing slavery. Over a third of the island was conttrolled.
  • Independence
  • I declare this nation independent from french rule and name it Haiti
  • Toussaint was arrested by the French and imprisoned in the Swiss Alps. He died 10 months later.
  • The revolution for independence must continue even when I have been taken away.
  • Jean-Jacques Dessalines takes over the revolution after Toussaint is arrested. He leads the slaves in the Battle of Vertieres where French forces were defeated.
  • I will lead the revolution and gain independence for this nation.
  • Saint-Domingue gains independence from France on January 1, 1804. It is the first black republic. It is renamed Haiti by Dessalines
