Storyboard Text

  • In 1820, the free soilers and pro-slavery people argued on whether the territory of Missouri should a be free or slave state
  • There should be more slavery!
  • We need more free states!
  • Congress didn't want conflicts between the north and the south to get worse, so it wanted to make a compromise to keep everyone satisfied
  • Your plan is terrible!
  • Well, do you got any better ideas?
  • Congress appointed senator Henry Clay to create a compromise between the north and the south to ease tension
  • Henry! I need you for something important.
  • To keep the balance even, two states entered the union as a result. Missouri could enter as a slave state as long as Maine could enter as a free state
  • What's up, Maine?
  • I'm fine, Missouri!
  • To add to the compromise, a line was drawn along the 36, 30 line to separate further slave and free territories
  • How do you like it?
  • I don't see how this could go wrong!
  • Both the north and the south agreed to the deal and no major conflicts arose for more than 30 years, delaying the civil war
