Annmarie, her sister Kristi and her friend Ellen were training for a race when a Nazi solider stopped them and asked them why they were running. They were scared.
Annmarie, Ellen and Kirsti hurried home and told their parents about the Nazi solider. Their parents tell them to stay away from the Nazis. Kirsti starts playing with her dolls and Annmarie is asked to go to get a button for her coat by her mother.
When Annmerie and Kirsti arrive at the store to get a button, there is a nazi symbol on the door and the owner is nowhere to be found. Where could she be?
Ellen and her family are exited for the Jewish New Year and spend the day decorating. On Jewish New Year ,Annmarie, Kirsti and Ellen are playing dolls when Annmarie's mom tells them that Ellens parents are leaving for awhile and Ellen will stay with them.
That same night an officer marches into their apartment looking for hidden Jews. Annmerie rips off Ellen's neckalace so he wont know she is Jewish. When the officer came into Annmerie and Ellens room he was suspicious that Ellen was the only one with brown hair. Annmeries' dad ran and got a photo album and convinced him that it was their child. In reality, it was Annemerie's dead sister Lise who also had brown hair.
The next morning, Annmaries' dad calls her mothers brother Henrik. He told Henrik he is sending him three cigarettes. Uncle Henrik lives in the village of Gilleje across the water from Sweden.
