  • "It was twelve by village clock" (line 86). This example shows the imagery to the sense of sight. This is because in your mind you can form a picture of everything that happens in the scene.

  • This example shows the metaphor that the horse created a spark. This is showing that Paul Revere's ride created a spark that started the Revolutionary war.
  • Tone
  • "The fate of the nation was riding that night" (Line 78)
  • This example shows personification because the wind is talking just like a human would. 
  • Symbolism
  • This example shows a simile because the phantom ship is being compared as going across the moon like a prison bar.
  • "A phantom ship, with each mast and spar / Across the moon like a prison bar" (Lines 20-21)
  • This scene shows the tone as tense because the night of Paul Revere's ride would decide the nations fate.
  • The symboism in this set of lines is the lantern. The lantern symbolizes that the British are coming by land. Two lanterns would symbolize that their coming by sea.
  • "Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch / Of the North Church tower as a signal light" (Lines 8-9)
