Explorer Robert Wilton finds a man named Victor Frankenstein freezing to death on an arctic expedition. He tells him a story about a monster that he created.
Victor Frankenstein was raised by his parents with an adopted girl named Elizabeth who he eventually fell in love with. Early on he is intrigued by science.
Victors mother dies right before he goes away to University. During his time in University he becomes obsessed with science and natural philosophy. He ends up creating new life by stitching various body parts together but is frightened by it and leaves it.
The monster kills Victors brother and Victor comes home. He cannot tell anyone who killed him because he doesn't want anyone to know he created the monster. He goes to Geneva and the monster finds him.
The monster tells victor about his life after being created. He tells him about how he hid beside a cabin inhabited by a family from which he learns how to speak and about how he his not accepted by society. The monster asks Victor to make a female monster to keep him company.
Victor agrees to make the female monster but changes his mind. The monster then vows to get revenge on Victor. The monster kills a friend of Victors and on his wedding night, kills Elizabeth. Victor chases the monster to the arctic circle where he finds Walton to tell him the story. Victor then dies and the monster takes him away never to be seen again.
