  • A mob searching for guns and gunpowder stormed the prison called Bastille on July 14. They chopped off one of the guards heads and paraded it around the city on a pike. This became a tradition during the French Revolution.
  • The National Assembly adopted a statement of revolutionary ideals. It was called the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. It said that "men are born and remain free and equal in rights." These rights were "liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression."
  • Most of the National Assembly's earliest reforms dealt with the Church. They declared what used to be Church lands as state land. They sold much of the Church's land to pay off their debts.
