  • The potato. A simple, but delicate crop that became a staple food to many all across the globe. However, it wasn’t always accepted into people’s plates.
  • However, it wasn’t always accepted into people’s plates. It was actually regarded as a crop that was poisonous in the late 1400s and early to mid 1500s. But, eventually, it became a widely renowned crop and beloved by all.

  • The potato originated in Peru and was first cultivated by the Inca Indians around 8000 BC to 5000 BC. Because of the potatoes remarkable adaptability to the environment, it was able to be grown in the harsh valleys of the Incas.
  • The potato didn’t quickly come to fame. It was viewed as a crop that was poisonous, but that was due to false classification.

However, in 1536, Spanish Conquistadors conquered Peru and found the potato. They brought it back to Europe and this is where the potato starts to gain popularity. It was recognized as a member of the nightshade family, a group of plants that are generally very poisonous.
  • But, in the late 1500s, which was during the start of the Second Agricultural Revolution, the potato began to be used as a common provision in some parts of Spain.
