Tom Robinson is a black man accused of rape. He is moved into Maycomb County jail before his trial. As he gets moved to the new jail, Atticus is waiting patiently in front of the jailhouse. while he's sitting, Jem, Scout and Dill follow Atticus from when he left. Four cars pull up and four men get out and one demands that Atticus moves from the jail door but he refuses.
Scout runs out of hiding and goes over to see Atticus. She eventually starts talking to Mr. Cunningham about his legal entailment and and his son. She tells Mr. Cunningham to say hey to his son for her. After hesitating he feels ashamed and lowers down to Scout telling her he'll say hey to Walter, After that he tells his companions to leave
Atticus tells all the kids to leave but Jem disobeys his father and stays. He believes that he is mature enough to stay and only a child would leave. Jem respectful tells Atticus he is staying because he fears for his safety and fears what will happen
