Ok, it's my turn to add a rule! We agree to only call each other by the names on our name-tags. Calling someone by another name or word is not allowed in our classroom! Why do you think this is an important agreement?....
Class Brit 1.~~~~~~ 2.~~~~~~ 3.~~~~~~
The third month of school.
Avi, when you sing it sounds GAY.
Well, I wasn't calling him a name!
Hey, Joe. Do you remember our Class Brit from the first day about using only the names on our name-tags?
To me it does sound like you just called him a name. How about we have a meeting after school so we can discuss this more?
Do you know what it means?
From your perspective, what happened?
Is there a reason you used that word to describe Avi?
Not really, its just a word.
I said Avi sounded gay. I didnt call him that though.
It sounds like you used a word without knowing what it means. Gay is a word that describes when two people of a similar gender love each other. Sometimes it is used to hurt people's feelings and to say that what people are doing, and how they are acting is wrong.
Being different is not wrong, and Avi singing the way he does is unique and wonderful. Do you understand how saying that could hurt his feelings?
I guess, yeah. I mean, it's ok to be different. I'm also different.
There might be other students who don't know what this word means. How would you feel about doing a Repair the Harm circle where we could talk about what happened, revisit the agreements from our Class Brit, and refresh our memories about why name-calling can hurt people's feelings?
