Storyboard Text

  • The first day of school.
  • Ok, it's my turn to add a rule! We agree to only call each other by the names on our name-tags.  Calling someone by another name or word is not allowed in our classroom! Why do you think this is an important agreement?....
  • Class Brit 1.~~~~~~ 2.~~~~~~ 3.~~~~~~
  • The third month of school.
  • Avi, when you sing it sounds GAY.
  • Well, I wasn't calling him a name!
  • Hey, Joe. Do you remember our Class Brit from the first day about using only the names on our name-tags?
  • To me it does sound like you just called him a name. How about we have a meeting after school so we can discuss this more?
  • Do you know what it means?
  • From your perspective, what happened?
  • Is there a reason you used that word to describe Avi?
  • Not really, its just a word.
  • I said Avi sounded gay. I didnt call him that though.
  • No.
  • It sounds like you used a word without knowing what it means.  Gay is a word that describes when two people of a similar gender love each other. Sometimes it is used to hurt people's feelings and to say that what people are doing, and how they are acting is wrong.
  • Being different is not wrong, and Avi singing the way he does is unique and wonderful. Do you understand how saying that could hurt his feelings?
  • I guess, yeah. I mean, it's ok to be different.  I'm also different.
  • Oh.
  • There might be other students who don't know what this word means. How would you feel about doing a Repair the Harm circle where we could talk about what happened, revisit the agreements from our Class Brit, and refresh our memories about why name-calling can hurt people's feelings?
  • Sure, that sounds okay to me.
