  • Direct 1"She had no dowry, no expectation, no way of being known, understood, loved, married by any rich and distinguished man". She wants to be known by the world and understood by others. She wanted to be married with a man that has money.
  • Direct 2"She dressed plainly because she could not dress well". Since she is poor she can't really dress up in well fashioned clothes like most rich people

  • Indirect 1“Her husband, who uncovered the soup tureen and declared with a delighted air,” Ah, the good soup! I don’t know anything better than that””. Loisel shows signs that he cherishes everything that is given to him.
  • Indirect 2“Madame’s looks became directly proportional to her life. She aged incredibly, looked worn out and provincial, lower than what she would’ve deemed as “low” and pretty, catty, and disillusioned with life”. She has been torn apart by life itself and appears to have aged. Now the beauty that was once her, has fallen to be equivalent to her life.
