  • Northern Free States: Why Did They Oppose It?
  • We have enough slavery in this country! We believe that it should go away completely!
  • Northern Free States:  Beliefs About Congressional Power?

  • South
  • Northern Free States: Fears About The Compromise?
  • No more slavery... Please!
  • Before the compromise, there was a balance between free states and slave states. When Missouri would become a state, it would disturb that balance. They also didn't like that there could be any chance of addition to slavery due to the fact that they were abolitionists.
  • Southern Slave States:  Why did they support it?
  •  I think that slaves are good and they help us white people do a good job with our chores. I say yes to more slaves!
  • The Northerners agreed that the Congress has the power to decide whether or not there would or wouldn't be slavery in the new states. The South disagreed because they wanted all new states to be slave states.
  • Southern Slave States: Beliefs about states' rights?
  • YES
  • So.... Slavery?
  • Northern states feared that the compromise would allow slavery to expand into the North and West and it would upset that balance between non slave states and slave states.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • What will I do without slaves!?
  • They supported the Compromise because they realized that they would be gaining slave states and that they would have more states under the 36-30 line than the Northern states had above the line.
  • Southern states believed that states should have the right of popular sovereignty meaning they could vote if they wanted to be a slave state or a free state.
  • NO
  • The Southern slave states fear that the compromise could get rid of slavery itself.
