CAUSE OF THE PERSIAN WARS Several of the Ionian Greek city-states of the west of Anatolia decided to go against the Persian Empire. The Ionian Greeks asked for help to the Greeks on the mainlands. Athens unlike several city-states sent help to the Ionians. Since the Persian empire mostly fought against the Athenian navy they lost and their king Darius I of Persia was furious that Athens had helped the Ionian rebels fight against Persia. From that point, Darius I declared war on Athens and their allies.
MARATHON Marathon was the first Persian war. Darius had sent one representative to many city-states with a special message to all Greeks that they had to send hi "earth and water" to recognize Darius as the ruler of their lands and seas. Sparta sent both earth and water to show Darius that the weren't intimidated. Darius sent his huge huge army across the Aegean sea containing his massive Persian army to start the land war and his troops landed in Marathon which was north of Athens. Darius's goal was to conquer Athens before they started conquering city-states. Sparta decided not to help Athens but Athens still won the war. The remaining Persian force attempted to leave Marathon and making its way towards Athens but luckily the Athenians had a an incredible runner named Pheidippides. He ran 26 miles from Marathon to warn Athens that the Persian empire was coming. Legends say that when he got to Athens he yelled "Rejoice, we conquer" and dropped to the ground dead. Since Pheidippides told Athens in advanced that the Persian empire was coming the Athens got ready for war and ended up winning. Darius I was forced to go back to Persia defeated once again by the Athenians.
"Rejoice, we conquer."
