Storyboard Text

  • Britain, France and USA took the west of Germany. They also took the west of Berlin, because it is the capital, but it is located in the Soviet sphere of influence.
  • In March 1948, West Germany became known as 'Trizonia' and had their own currency; the 'Deutchschmark'. This made the Soviets unhappy of the decision as they believed there were in effect two Germanies; East Germany and West Germany.
  • In Stalin's eyes, this was a further example of the West 'ganging up' on the soviet Union. He saw the formation of Trizonia as a means of developing the three zones ore efficiently and deliberately forcing the Soviet zone into poverty.
  • In June 1948, Stalin decided to shut off the land routes across Soviet controlled Germany into Berlin, in what has become known as the 'Berlin Blockade'. He wanted to show the USA, Britain and France that a divided Germany would not work.
  • The western allies launched Operation Vittles, also known as the Berlin Airlift. They flew fod, coal and other necessities, assebled in the Allied zones along the air corridors.
  • Overall, i think that these events has risen the tension between the US and the USSR, meaning that because of this, the event of war is likely to happen.
