"I said to Herbert that before I could go abroad, I must see both Estella and Miss Havisham. This was when we were left alone on the night of the day when Provis told us his story. I resolved to go out to Richmond next day, and I went." - Pip(Ch. 43)
"I couldn't undertake to say that, of my own knowledge. I mean, I couldn't undertake to say it was at first. But it either is, or it will be, or it's in great danger of being." - Wemmick(Ch. 45)
"Estella was married. ...though it was all but a conviction, I avoided the newspapers, and begged Herbert" -Pip (Ch. 47)
Before leaving, Pip decided to visit Estella and Miss Havisham. He also goes and visits Joe and promises Provis that when he returns, he will learn how to be a gentleman. Pip thinks that it will be a good idea for Provis to leave with him.
Wemmick had been informed that Compeyson is still alive and in London. He advices Pip to stay away and be careful.
He avoids newspapers in fear of reading about Estella’s marriage. He asks Herbert never to speak of her. He leads an unhappy, anxious life.
