  • During this scene Equality 7-2521 and his "friend" International 4-8818 discover this hole and they go down it to discover a tunnel. "The council does not know of this hole, so it cannot be forbidden." "We shall go, nonetheless" (Rand 31) is the start to Equality's "evilness" and him starting to disobey the council.

  • Here is where Equality is starting to steal candles from the home of the street sweepers and manuscripts from the home of the scholars. "Now we sit in the tunnel for three hours each night and we study " (Rand 35) is important because this is the start to Equality's incredible knowledge.

  • "We might not spill this pain more precious than pleasure." (Rand39) is how Equality feels about Liberty. When Equality see's liberty he falls in love instantly saying "for the first time did we know fear" (Rand39) which is something he isn't supposed to know like how he isn't supposed to love.

  • Equality wonders what the past was like, we wants to know about the unmentionable times and words. "What is the unspeakable word?" Curiosity like the is stuff that can hurt people in this society.
  • Equality and his curiosity discovers electricity spending the night in the tunnel. Even though his discovery is incredible and useful he says "This discovery haunted us." (Rand 53)
  • A little after Equality and Liberty met each other they have had a certain secret romance. However we haven't fully discovered that she is into him as well until here where she gives him a name "the Unconquered" (Rand 56 ). Then she shows her affection to him when she offers him water and "...we were holding our lips to their hands, and that they knew it, but did not move."(Rand 57)
