Dorothea Dix viewed the poor conditions of the jails cells of those who were imprisoned consisting of children and the mentally ill.
Dorothea reviewed her detailed notes from her investigation and presented them to the Massachusetts state legislature. She later began to travel the country.
Dorothea visited New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Illinois, and Louisiana. Legislation was passed in most of these states to expand and improve conditions of mental hospitals and instutitions.
Temperance was the movement concerning those with drinking problems, typically poor people. Alcohol was to blame for ruined families,marriages, along with work ethic. The movement became successful when Maine passed the Maine Liquor Law of 1851. Other states passed similar laws in which were repealed in years to come.
Elizabeth Lady Stanton drafted a “Declaration of Sentiments, Grievances, and Resolutions” that included basic rights for women in the Declaration of Independence. They met in Seneca Falls for their first convention. They fought for the right to vote along with rights that men held.
Emerson and Thoreau were two authors who inspired people to move away from society and live on their own, to align themselves with nature. They both stressed the importance of relying on nobody and stranding away from set government.
