  • After walking down the same street he came to an Ascetic
  • And what is this man afflicted with?
  • He is not afflicted but an Ascetic. An Ascetic is a person who has stripped themselves of any luxury to find realease from the fears of death and suffering
  • Overcome with compassion Siddhartha left the castle to leave behind his palace life, wife, and newborn son to find an end the universal suffering that he witnessed.

  • Siddhartha came across a group of 5 Ascetics and joined them in hopes of finding enlightenment. Suddenly after a
  • After the 6 years he still did not reach the state of enlightenment, even after doubling his efforts. Though one day a girl at a river he was meditating him offered him rice and he had taken it and had an epiphany on reaching enlightenment, it was not a path of extremes, but the middle. Though the other Ascetics saw this and thought he had given up on his quest, so they left him
  • The path to enlightenment is not one of extremism, but rather a middle path. Not luxurious, nor extreme suffering
  • After being left alone Siddhartha vowed not to stop meditating under the Bodhi tree until the night was over. He stayed for several days while the demon Mara attempted to claim enlightenment instead of him. After the demon had tried to stop him Siddhartha put his hand to the ground and asked the Earth to bear witness to his enlightenment, it had done this and banished the demon Mara in the same moment.

  • Siddhartha was hesitant to teach what he had learned as it was too complex and could not be communicated through words. After travelling about 100 miles away he found the 5 Ascetics that abandoned him at Deer park in Ispatana. To them and other who had gathered he preached his first sermon, talking about the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold path
