Exposition Holden is 16 years old boy that is tall at 6 feet 2. He has a little bit of grey hair and is very skinny. He has bad health because he smokes to much. He is depressed, confused, angry, anxious and kind.
After Holden has been expelled from Pency and his fight with Stradlater. After Holden is expelled, he goes to the house of Mr. Spencer. Mr. Spencer asks Holden if he is mad at him for having failed him. Then he tells Holden about life being but a game that a person must play according to the rules.
Holden's date with Sally Holden doesn't know what to do with Sally. When they go out, Holden thinks that she looks nice however, he is blindsided by her as she joins the "phonies" in the lobby.
Phoebe wearing Holdens Hat After having lost his brother, Holden cherishes his little sister Phoebe. Phoebe gives him a feeling of security. When Holden gives Phoebe his hat, it reminds him of his brother.
Holden looking at the ducks The ducks come back over and over again, no matter how harsh the winter is. He doesn’t know where they go, just like he doesn’t know how he’s going to make it through his own winter.
Resolution The story ends when Holden watches Phoebe go around on the carousal as she reaches for the gold ring. This is the only time in the book when Holden is happy and smiling.
