  • Western Europe was experiencing an economic crisis. People were starving and cold due to the winter months. Refugees that fled from eastern Germany towards the west made it the food shortages worse. Without help, all of Europe might fall into Communist hands.
  • The Marshall Plan
  • Truman proposed financial aid to all countries who were willing to fight the Communist regime. This was issued with the aim to contain the growth of communism.
  • Poland and Czechoslovakia
  • Greece and Turkey, two countries who received US financial aid, was able to pay for soldiers and protect themselves from the incoming communists.
  • Comecon
  • The USA realized that Western Europe would fall without their wealth. Therefore, the USA made another plan. It was to provide large sums of money to countries were willing to apply for it, this included communist countries as well. This was called the Marshall plan and it was led by the secretary of state, George Marshall.
  • Meanwhile, in wealthy America
  • Mr. George Marshall
  • The Marshall Plan sounded very enticing to Poland and Czechoslovakia, both communist countries. They were also suffering from poor economy and therefore needed the extra boost. However, Stalin prevented them from applying for this is a plan for the USA to spread their government system - Captialism.

  • Stalin tried to take the Marshall Plan down but failed. So, he was inspired by the Western Powers and created the Comecon, a Council for Mutual Economic Aid, for communist countries. However, there was no injection of money; instead, trading between countries.
