  • HOW DID THE BATTLES FOR THE EMPIRE UNFOLD? PART TWO
  • SORROWFUL NIGHT
  • Please just listen- NO! HELP!
  • For the next six months the Spanish stayed with the Aztec until Cortes was to be arrested for disobeying orders. He left Pedro de Alvarado in charge until he returned.
  • SORROWFUL NIGHT PART TWO
  • During an Aztec holiday, Pedro ordered Cortes' army to attack and kill hundreds of unarmed worshippers. Outraged by this act, the Aztec defeated the Spanish so ferociously that some men had to retreat in Cortes' palace away from the city.
  • AN UNFORESEEN ENEMY
  • Meanwhile, during all the chaos, Cortes and his allies defeated those who tried to arrest him. The defeated survivors joined Cortes. When he returned and discovered what happened, Cortes ordered Moctezuma to persuade his people towards the Spanish, but the only result was Moctezuma losing his life
  • THE FINAL BATTLE
  • After the death of Moctezuma, Cuitlaliuac was appointed emperor and countinued attacks against the Spanish. Almost 3700 were killed and the night of their death was known as the the Noche Triste. (Sorrowful Night)
  • Cortes and the rest of his surviving allies retreated while the Aztecs were dying of small pox brought by the Spanish. Almost half of the Aztec population died because their bodies had no resistance to the disease, but the Spanish were immune to it because it had existed hundreds of years before in Europe.
  • After regrouping, Cortes returned to Tenochitlan. The Aztec had no allies and were in population because of their epidemic. The last Aztec group retreated in August 13, 1521. Cuitlaliuac was hanged and the Almighty Aztec empire was no more.
