  • In 1854, the Kansas - Nebraska act was introduced which resulted in controversy over whether Kansas would become a slave state or not.
  • Charles Sumner's Speech
  • Andrew Butler is the "Don Quixote" of slavery!
  • Kansas was divided between those who supported slavery and those who did not. The territorial legislature consisted of mostly pro slavery forces which resulted in legalizing slavery. 
  • Sumner vs. Brooks
  •  John Brown along with a group of anti-slavery men attacked and killed a group of pro-slavery men
  • Ultimate Impact

  • Charles Sumner of Massachusetts was a strong antislavery leader who gave a speech aimed at calling out Andrew Butler, a defender of slavery. 
  • Preston Brooks, Butler's nephew, was enraged by what Sumner did and caned him. In the end, Sumner became a hero in the north and Brooks became a hero in the South. 
  • These events gave the name "Bleeding Kansas" and show that people were willing to kill for their cause by using guerilla warfare. It furthered the divide between the North and South by increasing violent acts done out of differing positions.
