  • I heard everything!!! Do You think I am Mad? Hearken, observe how healthily and calmly i can tell you the whole story!
  • every night for seven nights, i watched the old man sleep. it was not him that vexed me, but his evil eye. I plotted to kill the old man so his eye would trouble me no longer.
  • Who's there!?! Show yourself!
  • As i was opening my lantern, its hinges creaked, which woke up the old man. I stood absolutely still for over an hour...
  • This is the beginning of the story. The narrator is sitting in his living room telling the story...
  • You fancy me mad? could a madman be so clever as this? there was no spot of blood, ha ha! he is now stone dead; his eye will no longer trouble me.
  • The narrator wants more than anything to take the life of the old man. He doesn't even want his gold or valuables.
  • what's that noise?
  • Search the house!
  • Sir, have you seen the old man? We heard a shriek...
  • The old man was trying to convince himself that the sounds he heard were just a mouse crossing the floor, or a deathwatch boring into the walls, (deathwatches were an omen of death), but the shadow of Death had enveloped him...
  • Dissemble no longer! I admit it; tear up the planks under the rug!! Here lies the body, the beating of this hideous heart!!!
  • We got him!
  • High five!
  • Now you will see the careful actions I took to conceal the body. I dismembered it and hid it under the scantlings so cunningly that no eye, not even his, could detect anything wrong or out of place.
  • Three police heard a shriek, so they came to investigate. I was at ease, for what had I to fear? We chatted awhile, but before long, I wished them to begone. I heard a low, dull, quick noise, but as it persisted, I realized the sound was not within my ears...
  • Why yes my good men; the shriek was me from my dream and he's in the country...
  • Oh, what could I do? I raved, I swore, I cursed! They suspected, they saw, they knew! I could no longer bear those hypocritical smiles. Anything was more tolerable than this derision! I felt that I must scream or die!!!
