  •  A Spanish explorer named Coronado led an expedition into the US in 1540-1542 to find gold or anything of value.
  • 100 years after Coronado, French explorers came to America and followed the Mississippi River.
  • Around 100 years after Coronado, a French explorer named Louis Jolliet was the first person to put the names Kansas and Missouri on a map.
  • Europeans travel around the US looking to trade with Native Americans
  • Claude Charles Du Tisne was a French explorer that was sent to contact the Comanche tribe, but instead met the Osage and Pawnee tribes.
  • Ethienne Veniard de Bourgmont was a French explorer that came to Kansas four years after Du Tisne did.  He was sent to take control of Kansas through alliances and force, if necessary.
