The train was divided into the adjacent and critical areas. The victim collapsed in the critical area
The experiment took place in the 8th Avenue Subway station in New York, between 11am and 3 pm during week days for 103 days.
All of the victims were males, and were dressed identically in Eisenhower jackets, old trousers and no tie. They were aged from 26-35. The drunk victim carried a paper bag with a bottle inside, and the ill victim carried a cane.
The model would stand in the critical area and then help immediately after the collapse of the victim (70secs) and then repeat but wait for 150 secs. He would also do this in the adjacent area, wait for 70 secs and then for 150.
The model was always white, between the ages of 24-29. He wore informal clothes.
The other observer would note down the same information, but for the people in the adjacent area. She also recorded the time taken to help.
Both observers were female. One would note the gender, race, location and number of people in the critical area. also they would record who helped.
After 70 secs the victim collapses. The drunk victim received helped 50% of the time whereas the ill victim received help 95% of the time.
After they got to the next stop, they all got off and repeated the same experiment, but on the train going in the opposite direction.
