  • All of these animals are invertebrates. An invertebrate is an animal that does not have a backbone. 
  • Lobsters are crustaceans. They have a hard outer shell called an exoskeleton.  Lobsters can sometimes shed their shells, or molt.
  • A squid is an invertebrate grouped in the cephalopods. Squids have long tentacles that allowed them to obtain resources. They have an endoskeleton.
  • Butterflies are part of the arthropod group. They have segmented bodies, and jointed legs. They also have an exoskeleton. They bright color of their wings can sometimes scare away predators.
  • A snail is an invertebrate in the mollusk category. It has a thick-muscular foot to help it move around.  They also have soft bodies protected by one, or maybe two shells.
  • Invertebrates come in all different types, as you could probably tell. Invertebrates make up 97% of earths animals!!
