  • Saint-Domingue was a colony in France which was used for a pirate outpost. They originally sold beef as meat or leather but, they eventually began to run out of beef. So they decided to go to Spain to collect silver
  • In the 17th century the French convince the captions to stay so they invested their treasure for sugar plantations. Which they eventually got slaves to do the hard labor. Slaves were treated as property, they barely got food, their children were sold away from them.
  • In 1749 the slaves heard a rumor that they were freed by the King of France, so they began leaving but, the rumor was false so they began fighting. This was the begining of the first Haitian revolution. 
  • In may of 1791 the national assembly gave citizenship tofree men of color if they owned property, had money, and weren’t children ofslaves. In august 1791 a slave revolt broke out, Toussaint L’ouverture lead the slaves into an army to fight thetroops. Charles IV (leader of the Spanish) supported the slave revolts inSaint- Domingue to weaken the French In 1793 L’overture became an officer inthe Spanish military. In October 1793 British was still at war with francedecided to invaded Saint Domingo and then French freed the slaves because theydidn’t want to fight Spanish, british, and the slaves. On febuary 4, 1794 thenational convetion in paris freed the slaves. L’overture heard of theconventions so he switched back to French and changed the tide of the warmaking it the most successful slave revolt in history
  • However, they were still a part of France which was reled by Napoleon Bonaparte, which caused conflict. In 1799 Napoleon seized power in France and created a law that didnt apply to france overseas. Napoleon wanted to reconstruct land by using the money from Saint domingue, whom was thriving becuase, of sugar factories and slaves. In 1802 a French expedition commanded by Charles Victor Emmanuel (Napoleon's brother in law) went to saint domingue and began to fight for independence. L'clerc but L'oventure into prision in 1803 but, that didnt spark the war what sparked it was when they tried to take their guns away. During the revolution napoleons began to die off from disease and the battle. Napaleon called his surving 8,000 out of 40,000 troops back gome.
  • After his defeat Nopolean gave the land to Thomas Jefferson whom named it Hati. After their success numerous slave revolutions followed, including in Louisiana
