  • Simile
  • "The basement room was dark and warm, like the inside of a sealed jar." -Plath 1
  • Imagery
  • "The silence was soft with cobwebs" -Plath 1
  • Symbolism
  • "Proud in their freedom and their sometime loneliness. It was then that she made her decision." -Plath 9
  • The scene where Millicent is sitting on the log and flashing back is a great example of a simile. The author uses a simile by comparing the basement to a sealed jar.
  • Simile
  • On page one, the author is explaining the setting. To make the readers understand it better the author uses imagery. By saying the silence was soft with cobwebs, is explaining how it was very quiet.
  • Character - Millicent
  • This scene is showing how at the end of the story Millicent wants to be different and stand out and not like the other girls who blend it with each other. The author uses symbolism by explaining the sorority girls as sparrows and Millicent as a heather bird.
  • Theme
  • When Millicent is flashing back she talks about how she was never really accepted. She compares waiting for acceptance like waiting for a date to a dance. She says how the air would be like honey. The author is trying to tell you that the air was sweet and calm.
  • "With the lights clear and the air like honey" -Plath 3
  • Millicent is a round character. In the begging of the short story Millicent wanted to blend in because she was scared of being different. But as the story goes on, she realizes that it is okay to be different and she should accept that.
  • "Millicent had waited a long time for acceptance, longer than most." -Plath 3
  • The theme of this short story is to be yourself. It is okay to be different and don't let anyone or anything change you.
  • "Pale gray-brown birds in a flock, one like the other, all exactly alike. And then, for some reason, Millicent thought of the heather birds." -Plath 9
